Art Exhibits

Salem Public Library offers the use of temporary exhibit space at the Central Library and West Salem Branch for community art exhibits. Space is provided free of charge to area artists. The primary purpose of Salem Public Library art displays is to enrich the library experience for patrons. The Library Art Committee strives to offer a variety of mediums throughout each year.

FAQs

How Can I Apply to Display My Art?
Art Exhibit applications are received throughout the year. An online application is available through this site. Paper applications are available at Library services desks and in the Library Administration office. Applicants will be asked to provide five samples of the artwork that would be displayed. These can be delivered in the form of a Web URL (see online application form below), photos, slides, or digital emails delivered by email or on CD. Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee exhibition dates or acceptance of display.

Who Can Display Art?
Local artists and art organizations, from amateur to professional, are invited to apply to exhibit. Owners of artwork with local interest or historical significants are also encouraged to apply.

How are Exhibits Selected?
Proposals will be considered by the Library Art Committee. In selecting exhibits, the Library Art Committee takes into consideration: overall community interest; relevance to Library programs; dates of previous Library exhibits by the same artist, lender, or organization; dates of previous Library exhibits of similiar items or tpics; special needs, costs, or requests associated with proposed exhibits. All selections are at the discretion of the Library Art committee.

How will Artwork be Displayed?
Two-dimensional artwork must be suitably frames and ready for hanging. Unframed artwork will not be exhibited without specific permission from the Exhibits Manager. Free-standing panels with adjustable hanging rods are used to artwork of this type. Three-dimensional art may be display using three locking glass display cases.

How Long are Exhibits on Display?
Exhibits run for one calendar month, with set-up taking place one or about the 1st of the month; and removal no later than the last day of the month.

Can Art be Sold during a Display?
It is the responsibility of the arts to provide pricing information for all items available for salem. All sales will be handled by the Library Administration Office and the Library shall receive a 10 percent commission of the gross price on all sales.
