What is a Security Survey?
A Security Survey is an assessment of your property to see if it meets with the crime prevention standards promoted by law enforcement for the protection of your property against crime. The service is free of charge and provided to properties within the city limits of Salem. Using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles in conjunction with basic security standards gives you an opportunity to see where your property could be enhanced.
I have locks. Isn’t that enough?
Sometimes we don’t think about security items beyond the normal locks on our doors and windows, but proper landscaping can help deter criminal behavior, as well. This is just one of the examples of what will be evaluated during a Security Survey.
How do I sign up?
All you need to do is complete the request by printing and filling out the Security Survey brochure and return it to the Salem Police Department. Once we receive the information, we will contact you to make an appointment to perform the survey of your property.
Will I need to be present during the survey?
Yes. The assessment team requires that somebody representing the property be present during the survey. For residential properties, surveyors do not need to enter the home if you prefer. However, they will need to have access to closed areas such as a backyard and ask you some general questions about the property.
When will I get the results of the survey?
Once the survey is completed, the evaluators create a concise report. You will receive this report via standard U.S. mail.
Please feel free to contact the Crime Prevention Unit at (503) 588-6175 or crimeprevention@cityofsalem.net if you have any questions or comments after you receive the report.
