Reducing Flooding Caused by Beaver Dams
Beaver build dams to create more habitat for themselves, and at the same time they create and enhance habitat for a variety of other wildlife. However, Salem was not developed in a manner that accounted for beaver habitat. Consequently, beaver habitat can directly conflict with the habitat needs of humans - our infrastructure, houses, and landscaping. To effectively coexist with beaver in such circumstances, we sometimes have to modify their habitat. This can be done by altering their structures, artificially restricting their habitat footprint, and/or limiting their ability to build dams at constriction points (such as under-sized culverts).
The goal of the coexistence strategies listed below is to continue to benefit from beaver activities while reducing risks to adjacent structures and infrastructure. Keep in mind that if you lower the beaver pond too much or breach the dam too often, the beaver may decide to move their dam to another location, which may be better or worse for flooding. Either way, the problem is unlikely to be fully resolved by being overly aggressive.
