Crime Data & Statistical Information
Crime data and historical analysis are tools useful to residents and police to understand the types of crime reported in the community. While the statistics help law enforcement make decisions to best direct resources and effectively address serious criminal issues, the data and information can also help residents understand the overall crime trends in the community and department operations. The data also depicts the types of calls for service handled daily by the police department.
Providing the data directly to the public emphasizes the Salem Police Department's commitment to maintaining public trust and transparency.
Crime Data
LexisNexis Community Crime Map give residents a tool to understand the types and amounts of police activity occurring in their community. The crime map provides residents the ability to search for reported crimes in the city of Salem in near-real time.
Residents can tailor the data to answer their questions by filtering calls for service in the map. The system also includes features such as a search for registered sex offenders.
Use the Filter button located at the top the screen. Select the Events (or crime categories) you wish to display, then click Apply. Once your selection is complete, icons depicting the various reported crimes appear on the map. Simply click on the icon to view the case number, crime type, hundred block and street name. Exact addresses are not listed by the system.
Historical Analysis
The Salem Police Department analyzes the vast amounts of data collected and produces reports to inform decisionmakers throughout the community.
The Salem Police Department uses internal reporting sources as well as data and information from local, state and federal sources to identify issues within the community. Reports are produced from that information.
The following reports are presented to provide in-depth information to our community:
- Uniform Crime Reports are the standard crimes reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Find reported historical data from our city through their program on the FBI website.
- Review the Salem Police Department 15-Year Crime Trend Report (2009-2023) which looks at crime trends over that last decade and a half.
- The Six-month Analysis of Crime Report produced in 2023 details crime trends for the first six months (January through June) of the last four years.
