Salem Police Department Halloween Dress Rehearsal
Each October, on the Saturday before Halloween night, the Salem Police Department invites parents to bring their children in costume for an afternoon of games and safety activities which remind children to be safe on Halloween night.
Kids can rehearse being safe on Halloween night
The event features several stations where children get to hear from officers about the importance of visibility and following pedestrian safety rules. The themes of traffic safety and safety while going door-to-door are essential to reinforce with children and their parents.
Salem Police partners with other city departments and local businesses that also provide treats and various other entertaining activities for the kids. Partners include the City of Salem Library, Neighborhood Services, Parks & Recreation, and Natural Water Resources, Falck Ambulance, Willamette Valley Communications Center, and The Home Depot.
While supplies last, children who go through all the safety stations receive a blinking LED light to wear on Halloween night to increase their visibility to passersby and motorists.
Photo opportunities will also be available with members of the Salem Police SWAT Team and K-9 Unit.
If you have never attend, check out these photos of past events.
Other things to think about if you can't attend
For families unable to attend, please consider the following safety tips.
Start with the costume
- Ensure the costume is bright and reflective. Incorporate fluorescent sticks, bracelets, or even reflective tape into the design
- Avoid tripping hazards by making sure the costume fits well and isn't too long
- Masks can obscure peripheral vision. Use makeup instead to complete the look.
Get ready to walk the neighborhood
- Go over the safety rules with kids before you leave the house.
- Carry a flashlight and keep it lit to increase your visibility
- Cross streets at the corner, and always look both ways before entering the roadway. Never cross between parked cards.
- Stay on sidewalks and out of the roadway when walking from house to house.
The whole community can help
- Keep your porch lights lit to illuminate the neighborhood.
- Motorists should drive with extra care.
- Watch for excited children who may try to cross in the middle of the street.
- Carefully exit driveways and alleyways.
